I

know we're all used to the idea of becoming an expert in one area of specialty for the rest of our lives. It's what's been implemented into our lifestyle since the beginning of our developing years. However, I choose to challenge that belief in a way that sways us away from mastering one skill forever and instead, mastering the concept of being multifaceted.

What does being multifaceted mean?

Essentially, it means to have many different parts or sides — each part relating to you in a way that shapes your identity. Although there is great emphasis on the idea of each side being different, they are all similar to the extent that they are all cohesive to makeup, you.

Let's compare this idea to a Rubix cube. The incomplete cube is us individuals in the process of finding the countless dimensions that define us. Once we can complete the cube to where each side is one color, that's comparable to us finding the many facets that make up who we are. Note - this is not something that comes to an individual overnight but instead over time. Self-discovery is a process that is unique to each person's journey. As one grows older, life experiences become more fulfilling and insightful. Through these experiences, we start gravitating toward the facets that interest us. This is us slowly coming closer to figuring out the everso complex Rubix cube — life.

What's the significance of being multifaceted? How can I implement this idea into my everyday life?

There's so much more to life than just conditioning yourself to do one thing forever. I believe that we gain more value out of life when we are skilled in many domains — abilities that we are passionate about. Being multifaceted stems from within. It's about knowing you are capable of everything that inclines you and taking advantage of all that comes to you. It's that go-getter attitude!

At the same time, don't go about trying to do everything at once to where it becomes overwhelming. Figure out your intention behind embarking on this new skill. Remember that not everyone is the same, so some things may not resonate with you as they do with others.

Most importantly, let it come naturally. There will be some things brought to your attention that you will not gravitate towards, and that's okay. The energy you exude is very telling, so don't force the idea of being multifaceted because this will ultimately lead you down a path that doesn’t align with your authentic self. Overall, understand that you have the ability to be disciplined in multiple functional areas, and this shows great strength of character.

I challenge all of you to get out of your comfort zone. By doing this, we'll find the many facets that encompass who we are. Stepping out of one's comfort may seem a little daunting, but it all has to do with pushing yourself to do new things. Discomfort amid a new experience eventually builds confidence in the tasks as you become more familiar with it. Find what speaks to you and run with that! Begin creating the sides that make up your Rubix cube.
