Black Music Month is a celebratory movement that honors the rich history and cultural significance of black music. Throughout June, we pay tribute to the diverse genres and notable artists who have shaped the musical landscape. One integral aspect of black music's legacy is the momentous impact of DJs. DJs are the gatekeepers of black music. For years they've curated soulful sounds across dance floors, from the early days of vinyl to the digital age. Their art and ability to connect with audiences have driven black music movements for generations and beyond.

In celebration of Black Music Month, we had the pleasure of connecting with DJ Kendollaz - DJ, producer, and event curator - who has been making waves in the music industry. With an incredible gift for blending sounds and curating unforgettable events, Kendollaz has emerged as a force to be reckoned with. Her passion for black music shines through in every aspect of her work. In this interview, we delve into her affinity for music, inspiration, and the significance of black music in her life and career.

How would you describe your djing style in three words?

eclectic, technical, and polished

What inspires you and your work?

Paulo Coelho said, "The reward of our work is not what we get, but what we become." The source of my motivation, creativity, and passion that drives my work comes from my potential. There will always be an upgraded version of myself that I can become if I work for her, and so I do!

When did your affinity for music begin?

I've had an affinity for music for as long as I can remember and actually have DJs in my family, so I definitely thought about starting more than once, but the defining moment that made me become a DJ was when I was a freshman in college. My friend group wanted to throw a party, and it made the most sense for me to handle music for the night. I had so much fun I saved up my coins, bought some equipment, and came back the next semester a DJ.

What are your must-haves when on set?

You can count on me to have Blistex and Apple headphones handy during my set.

Do you have any pre-show rituals or superstitions?

I actually don't! I do get butterflies before every set, though.

What has been the most challenging part about pursuing this profession?

The most challenging part of pursuing this profession has been dealing with industry politics. As a Black + Queer woman in a straight male-dominated space a lot of times in the past, I felt like working twice as hard to prove myself still would only result in stagnation. Over time, I started to see a shift in my relationship dynamics post actively seeking ways to assert myself within the community. I also made a conscious effort to strictly work with people who recognized the value of different perspectives from their own.

What is your favorite album of all time? Why is it your favorite?

My favorite album of all time is When I Get Home by Solange. There's so many inspirational messages in the album that will always speak to me.

Share a tip with someone whose dream is to become a DJ.

Work to stack your musical skillset as best you can. The more you can do during your sets, the more you can make yourself stand out!
